Governor McKee, Commissioner Infante-Green Recognize Weekly Attendance Leaders

Week of April 8, 2024 
 

PROVIDENCE, RI – Acknowledging the importance of consistent attendance in education and in alignment with the #AttendanceMatters campaign, Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green are pleased to highlight the top elementary, middle, and high schools with the greatest average weekly attendance as well as elementary and secondary schools with the greatest improvement in weekly attendance.

 

The following schools are Rhode Island’s attendance leaders for the week of April 8, 2024*: 

 

·     Elementary: Ashton Elementary School, Cumberland – 96.3% 

·     Middle: Achievement First Iluminar Mayoral Academy Middle School – 93.7% 

·     High School: Cumberland High School – 95.1%

 

Special recognition is extended to the following schools for demonstrating the most improved average attendance rates from the previous week:  

 

·     Elementary: Stony Lane Elementary School, North Kingstown – 3.9%

·     Middle: Joseph L. McCourt Middle School, Cumberland – 5% 

·     High: Central Falls High School – 5%

 

The Governor and Commissioner express their gratitude and encouragement to all schools in Rhode Island for their ongoing efforts to prioritize attendance and reinforce the value of consistent learning experiences for all students.

Former President Trump has been found in contempt of court for violating the gag order in his hush-money criminal case. New York Judge Juan Merchan had barred Trump from talking about anyone connected to the case. Today, Merchan ruled Trump violated that order and fined him nine-thousand-dollars in total.        A Columbia University campus building is reportedly being occupied by anti-Israel-Hamas war protesters. Overnight, reports came in that pro-Palestinian students had stormed Hamilton Hall and turned over desks, smashed windows and caused other damage. Columbia has started suspending students through next school year who refused to leave the encampment set up on campus after a deadline to leave passed yesterday.       A shootout in Charlotte, North Carolina has left four law enforcement officers dead and at least four others injured. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings says the officers were part of a fugitive task force serving a warrant at a home on Monday, when a suspect opened fire. That suspect was killed, but another person inside the home soon started firing.        A deadline for some student borrowers to get debt cancelled by consolidating their federal loans is today. The Department of Education is making this one-time payment adjustment. It's part of the Biden administration's effort to forgive nearly five-billion-dollars in student loans.       The FCC is hitting the nation's leading mobile carriers with heft fines for illegally sharing access to customers' location data without consent. In a news release on Monday, the Federal Communications Commission said T-Mobile is being fined more than 80-million-dollars, A-T-and-T more than 57-million-dollars, and Verizon just under 47-million. The FCC also issued a 12-million-dollar fine to Sprint, which was purchased by T-Mobile.        Two more teams can advance to the second round of the NBA Playoffs tonight. The New York Knicks will look to close out their series when they host the Philadelphia 76ers. Later, the Indiana Pacers will try to eliminate the Bucks on the road in Milwaukee.
