BLACKSTONE RIVER COMMONS AIMS TO RECONNECT COMMUNITY WITH THE RIVER

Soliciting Letters, Poems and Gifts To The River

PAWTUCKET,  RI - A group of organizations, institutions and individuals, are partnering on a project called the Blackstone River Commons. The project aims to use art and design to reclaim the river as a commons - something that is shared and protected by the community, to be kept open and protected for future generations. A commons that can hold the many complex histories and challenges of the river and that requires solidarity, active stewardship and care moving forward.

With the celebration of ZAP50 this year and the publishing of the Blackstone River Needs Assessment, there are many events taking place throughout the Blackstone River watershed to reconnect communities with the Blackstone River and strengthen a sense of place through a connection to the river.

As part of this work, the Blackstone River Commons is soliciting letters,  poems and gifts from the community to the river. The prompt for the letter is…. If you could have a conversation with the Blackstone River what would you say?  You can write the letters and poems individually or join us during a series of events and walks throughout the Blackstone Valley this year.  The gifts are intended to be creative offerings for the Blackstone River that reflect the complex histories, presents and futures of the river.  The gifts can be in any artistic medium. We also welcome and encourage school groups and university classes to use this prompt in their classes.

A selection of the letters, poems and gifts will be included in a final exhibit and publication. For inclusion in the exhibit and publication, materials need to be received by  September 30th, 2022.
