The Speaker of the House is calling on senators to "weigh the equities" when it comes to passing voting rights legislation. Addressing the issue on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Nancy Pelosi said American democracy is at stake and lawmakers should act as such. Pelosi said protecting the American right to vote is a duty a politician is tasked with from the moment they're sworn in.        The man who took hostages at a Texas synagogue Saturday thought Jewish worshipers were powerful enough to have a Pakistani woman released from a nearby military prison. Jeffrey Cohen, one of the hostages who managed to escape, said British citizen Malik Faisal Akram held worshipers at gunpoint because he believed the conspiracy theory that Jews control everything and could simply call President Biden to have the woman released. Akram was killed by authorities. No hostages were harmed.       Doctor Anthony Fauci says it's still too soon to say whether the omicron Covid variant will be the final wave of the pandemic. The omicron variant is highly transmissible and less severe than other variants, so it's sparked hope that it could bring COVID down to the level of a seasonal flu. The White House chief medical advisor said it's an "open question" whether omicron would be the "live virus vaccination" some are hoping for.        Twitter is expanding its feature that lets a user flag a tweet as "misleading" to more countries across the globe. The social media company is now bringing the test feature to Brazil, Spain and the Philippines. The feature was first launched in August in the U.S., South Korea and Australia. Twitter said it has received three-million reports from users since its initial test launch.        The year's first Grand Slam continues at the Australian Open. On the men's side, Number-2 seed Daniil Medvedev [[ med-veh-duhv ]] and Number-3 seed Alexander Zverev [[ zeh-ruhv ]] each advanced with straight set wins. On the women's side, top-seeded Ashleigh Barty made short work of Lesia Tsurenko with a two-set sweep. Madison Keys eliminated fellow American Sofia Kenin to punch her ticket to the next round.
