Rep. Shallcross Smith Receives Committee Assignments


STATE HOUSE — Speaker of the House K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) has assigned Rep. Mary Ann Shallcross Smith (D-Dist. 46, Lincoln, Pawtucket) to serve on the House Committee on Corporations, the Committee on Education, and the Committee on State Government and Elections.

The Committee on Corporations considers issues relating to financial institutions, business regulation, property and casualty insurance and consumer protection. The Education Committee deliberates all matters relating to public education. The House Committee on State Government and Elections is responsible for legislation relating to state affairs, governmental departments and divisions, administrative procedures, open meetings, elections law and constitutional amendments.

Representative Shallcross Smith was elected to the House in November. She was sworn in on Jan. 5. She previously served the House district in 2009-2010.


Texas Governor Greg Abbott is turning down an offer from the Biden administration for the state to work with FEMA to test and possibly quarantine migrants crossing the border. The Republican governor yesterday said Texas will not aid a program that makes the U.S. a magnet for illegal immigration. The White House says its policy is to work with local governments to test migrants.        There's word today that senior aides to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo rewrote a report containing the number of coronavirus nursing home deaths. The original report, authored by state health officials last June, claimed over nine-thousand had died. The New York Times says the figures reported may have been 50-percent lower than the actual total. The Cuomo Administration responded with a statement saying the data was omitted after health officials could not confirm it had been verified.       A former State Department aide appointed by ex-President Donald Trump has been arrested in connection with the Capitol riot. Federico Klein was arrested by the FBI in Virginia yesterday. The bureau wouldn't say what the charges were against him. Klein is the first person who worked directly in the Trump administration to face charges for the riot.        A new poll suggests that Americans' trust in the Black Lives Matter movement has fallen since last year's George Floyd protests, while faith in local law enforcement has risen. Last June, 60-percent said they trusted the Black Lives Matter movement. That number is now down to 50-percent. Meanwhile, trust in local police has risen from 56-percent to 69-percent.        FedEx is aiming to become carbon-neutral by 2040. The logistics company says they'll invest two-billion dollars to start achieving that long-term goal. FedEx will be putting money in sustainable energy initiatives, including replacing all of its delivery trucks with zero-emission electric vehicles over the next two decades.        Yoko Ono Lennon is re-releasing John Lennon's debut solo album as a box set. The new reissue of Lennon's iconic 1970 album "Plastic Ono Band" will include over 150 tracks, including outtakes, demos and jam sessions, and 87 previously-unreleased recordings. It comes out April 16th.
